Sitting in the Perthshire hills overlooking Kenmore and Aberfeldy, Urlar is a collection of diverse habitats – a home for wildlife, plant life, and local people.
Urlar unfolds across roughly 7,400 acres, revealing a rich tapestry of farmland, woodland, and peatland. Urlar starts low down, just by the Birks of Aberfeldy, before reaching high up into the hills beyond the treeline. It's within this collection of ecosystems that farm animals, wild birds, and people all come together. Here, within an expansive heather moorland landscape, you’ll find wee lochs, old trees and the gentle stream of the Urlar Burn.
Urlar's current custodian is The Oxford Endowment Fund, managed by OUem.
We are committed to managing Urlar with a respect for tradition and an eye over the horizon. It's a holistic approach, and one that requires patient work and careful planning.
Urlar's long-term goals are three-fold: to enhance biodiversity, build a more resilient ecosystem and establish a significant carbon sink; to bring local people with us, through education, employment, and access; and to provide this landscape with a solid financial foundation for the future.
In addition to our ecological activities, we are creating a select number of sustainable holiday retreats that celebrate the outdoors — reviving characterful existing buildings and introducing thoughtfully designed new spaces, all carefully balanced to immerse guests in nature, adventure, and tranquillity.
We aim to achieve our ambitions for Urlar in a methodical way. This has started by understanding the ecosystem interactions in our habitats, and putting in place a long term management plan.
Research
Since becoming Urlar's custodian in 2020, we have conducted extensive baseline surveys to understand this area's natural assets and ecological health. These surveys reveal significant potential for peatland and other habitat restoration, and highlight Urlar's diverse population of birds, plants, and mammals. The level of detail contained in this research is crucial if Urlar is to realise its full potential.
Management
The Urlar management plan takes these research findings and puts them to work in service of the land's wider goals. The management plan prioritises genuine engagement with the local community, with a core emphasis on peatland restoration, woodland creation, and sustainable farming. Urlar's management plan also maps out a broader mix of activity, including developing job opportunities through a new hospitality venture, and exploring the potential of renewable energy here.
